Chair's Letter--April, 2023

This spring, the work of the Conference of Great Lakes St. Lawrence Governors and Premiers has been renewed and re-energized by a series of in-person meetings with our partners.  Collaboration is at the heart of our work.

In February, the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa hosted the 100% Great Lakes Fish project team and Tribal representatives from around the region. The group is helping to develop new products derived from commercially caught Great Lakes fish in order to help support the fishery, rural economies and create jobs.   

In March, our State and Provincial maritime transportation experts traveled to Washington, D.C., for a series of meetings with Congressional and Administration officials. Together, we reaffirmed our commitment to efficiently fund the new Soo Lock system, support our ports as they seek federal funds to decarbonize, and collaborate as plans take shape for the new Great Lakes Authority.

Last, our international partnerships grew as GSGP led a successful trade mission to South Africa and Kenya in February. Next month, our international tourism marketing partnership—Great Lakes USA—will hold its annual meeting in Buffalo where the group will extend the program to attract European tourists to our region.

We have many more in-person events planned in coming months, culminating in our Governors’ and Premiers’ Leadership Summit this October in Cleveland, Ohio. As we continue to expand our communications and partnerships, please follow GSGP on LinkedIn to stay updated on our work.
